Ken Livingstone, mayor of London, says he opposes the academic boycott of Israel being considered by the country’s University and College Union. He made this statement during a meeting with members of Britain's Movement for Reform Judaism at the Sternberg Center, the movement's headquarters in North London.
Livingstone said an academic boycott would adversely affect the peace process. He added that boycotts should be used only as a last resort, saying this was the case with South Africa, but not Israel. In addition, he said it is a mistake to call Zionism racism. He expressed his belief that Yasser Arafat should have accepted the proposals aimed at ending the Israeli-Palestinian dispute that were offered in 2000 at Camp David. Read more
